Movement Principles: Pre-Pilates Exercise

Movement Principles is the essential first step in the Balanced Body education pathway. It provides a strong foundation in movement analysis, biomechanics, and cueing—skills that support confident, effective teaching. This course is required for all Balanced Body Pilates training, no matter your background or experience, and offers a shared framework and lens for understanding the Pilates system. It introduces Pre-Pilates exercises that prepare the body for the next level of the Pilates curriculum and can be used as an introduction to the Pilates system on the mat or other equipment, supporting work with special populations such as rehabilitation, active aging, osteoporosis, and pregnancy.
Each course comes with everything you need to support your learning: a full-colour digital Balanced Body® manual and lifetime access to video tutorials. The manual provides clear exercise descriptions, photos, and cueing tips, while the videos allow you to review each exercise at any time to deepen your understanding and build confidence.

Mat 1: Introduction to Pilates & Beginning/Intermediate Exercises

Mat 1 forms the foundation of the Pilates method. This course includes an introduction to the history and principles of the Pilates method and the beginning and intermediate level exercises. Each exercise includes training on modifications, challenges, the purpose of the exercise and any precautions for injuries and special populations. How to design and teach group classes, and guidelines for teaching seniors and pre and postnatal classes are included.
Each course comes with everything you need to support your learning: a full-colour digital Balanced Body® manual and lifetime access to video tutorials. The manual provides clear exercise descriptions, photos, and cueing tips, while the videos allow you to review each exercise at any time to deepen your understanding and build confidence.

Mat 2: Intermediate/Advanced Exercises

Mat 2 teaches the remaining intermediate and advanced level Mat exercises for a complete understanding of the Pilates Mat program. Lectures include progressive skill development to achieve the advanced exercises, programming for intermediate and advanced classes and creating successful Mat classes.

The manual provides clear exercise descriptions, photos, and cueing tips, while the videos allow you to review each exercise at any time to deepen your understanding and build confidence.

Mat 3: Enhanced Mat & Props

Prerequisite: Movement Principles, Mat 1 and 2, or successful completion of a comparable Pilates mat program.

Take for continuing education credits or simply to add infinite variety to your current Mat programming. Students who have taken Mat training, either from Balanced Body or another provider are welcome.
Enhanced Pilates Mat completes the mat training by adding rings, rollers, bands, and balls to the traditional Mat exercises. In addition, Enhanced Mat includes functional exercises for the upper and lower body, expanding the Mat work beyond the core to develop whole body strength and flexibility. The Balanced Body Programming System is introduced to make class design easy, effective and fun. Adding props to a mat class makes them more dynamic, creative, and accessible.

Mat Intensive

Our Mat Certification Intensive is a focused, immersive training designed for those who want to complete their Mat education in a condensed format. Running May 11–17, this intensive includes Movement Principles, Mat 1, Mat 2, and Mat 3, allowing you to move through the full Mat curriculum in a cohesive, integrated way.
This training is offered both in-studio in beautiful Victoria, BC, and live online, making it accessible while still maintaining a strong sense of connection and support. Spending consecutive days together allows concepts to build naturally, movement to deepen, and questions to be explored in real time. Rather than spacing courses out over months, you’ll gain momentum, continuity, and a strong embodied understanding of the Pilates Mat system.
You’ll learn alongside a supportive cohort with guidance from experienced educators, with time dedicated to practice, observation, and discussion throughout the week. Whether joining in person or online, the intensive format supports deep learning and confident integration of the material.
By the end of the week, you will have completed the full Balanced Body Mat curriculum and be well on your way toward certification.
